Material Matters

Visual Notes

My series Songs of Silence took shape, among other things, in three leporellos. Viewers’ reactions “calming, comforting, hopeful” confirm that the work resonates. The tangibility of the objects themselves proved to be an unexpectedly powerful part of that experience. This has made me curious: how can I use material and form even further to deepen my fine art photography?

I am now exploring that insight further. How can material deepen the theme of impermanence? Which carriers, such as handmade paper, transparent fabrics, layers and textures, make time more tangible? I am focusing on analog and hybrid techniques such as transfers, cyanotype, and collage; techniques that carry their own fragility, their own sense of passing time. My goal: to make my photography less digital and more tangible, so that the material itself becomes part of the storytelling.

For this material research I received a grant from Fentener van Vlissingen Fonds via FOTODOK (2026)

All feedback and reaction to these experiments is welcome.
